Back in the days, courses like Law, Engineering, Medicine, Accounting etc were the courses most people cared about. Today, due to advanced human activities and broader interests, new courses that may be considered innovative, daring and sometimes weird have sprung up in universities.

Below is a list of 5 courses you probably never knew existed.

1. Astrobiology

 Wonder if aliens exist? Are you fascinated by evolution, origins and the future of life? Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary scientific field concerned with the origins, early evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. Astrobiology combines the knowledge and techniques from many fields, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, atmospheric science, oceanography and aeronautical engineering. With this degree you can work with international agencies like National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and aerospace companies.

2. Adventure Education

If you enjoy having fun in the great outdoors, then this course will interest you. Adventure education will expose you to skills like wilderness expedition, rock climbing, camping, mountaineering etc. With this course, you can pursue a career in national parks and recreation management, therapeutic adventure, environmental education etc. It is available in Plymouth State University.

3. Ecogastronomy

This degree is for those who have an interest in agriculture nutrition and mother nature. Eco-gastronomy is an approach to alternative consumption that stresses the importance of the interaction between humans and food and the effect produced by that.. The aim of the program is to promote healthier and more sustainable food practices and reduce the impact food production has on the environment. This course can be taken at the University of New Hampshire. Chef, Community health professional, Dietary technician, Farm manager, Food and beverage manager, Marketing & events manager, Nutritionist are some of career opportunities you can opt for with this degree.

4. Horology

I bet you never thought that one could go to the university to study time. Horology is the study of the measurement of time. You’ll learn the art of making clocks, timers and watches. You’ll examine the history of timekeeping, how clocks and watches work, and how they are designed. This course is available for study in Birmingham City University. You can graduate with this degree and go on to own your own watch brand like Cartier Richemont, Rolex, Patek Philippe.

5.  Fire Engineering

No, this is not a course to encourage Pyromaniacs. Infact, this course is all about safety from fire. Fire Engineering is the application of scientific and engineering principles to  protect people, property and the environment from the destructive effects of fire.  With this course, you’ll be exposed to the phenomena and effects of fire and you’ll learn about the reaction and behaviour of people to fire. One can graduate with this degree and go on to become a firefighter or a fire consultant. Course is available in the University of Central Lancashire.
